Princess Cruises to return to Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta…

Princess Cruises, which pulled ships from Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan due to security fears earlier this year, will return to the Mexican coastal cities in 2012.

“We put back Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta on our schedule for the fall 2012-spring 2013 schedule as we would very much like to return to these ports, which have long been a part of our Mexico cruises,” said Julie Benson, Princess’ vice-president for public relations. “These cruises are still a long way out and as the cruises approach we will be evaluating the situation and will make any changes if necessary.”

When the line dropped Puerto Vallarta in June, it specifically cited dangers at the port.

At the time, Princess spokeswoman Karen Candy said: “As the safety and security of our passengers and crew is our highest priority, and based on the continued violence in these areas, we’ve made the decision to cancel our calls to Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan.”

Mexican officials had said Princess’ move left the country’s tourism industry in “total shock.”

“Puerto Vallarta is a perfectly safe destination,” Rodolfo Lopez Negrete, chief operating officer of the Mexico Tourism Board, said. “We were very surprised and clearly very concerned about the announcement of Princess Cruises pulling out.”

The line noted at the time that it would monitor the safety situation and that it still hadn’t dropped plans to visit after Jan. 1, 2012.

Under new plans, the Sapphire Princess will visit both of the west coast ports on six cruises from Los Angeles between Nov. 17, 2012, and April 20, 2013. The ship will also visit Cabo San Lucas.

Other upcoming Princess itineraries will also include the coastal cities.

The Star Princess and Sapphire Princess will visit Puerto Vallarta on cruises out of Los Angeles and San Francisco in the winter and spring of 2012. And later in the year Mazatlan appears in itineraries again, including the Star Princess’ Sept. 26, 2012, sailing from San Francisco
