Last-minute summer cruise deals still available…

If you are kicking yourself for not getting out of town on a cruise this summer, travel agents say there are still deals to be had.

“There are definitely last-minute deals to be found before September,” said Dwain Wall, general manager of CruiseOne & Cruises Inc.

Wall added that “it’s not just great pricing right now,” but strong offers that include onboard credits, pre-paid gratuities and free shore excursions.

He pointed to several last-minute deals now being offered in the Caribbean on Royal Caribbean International.

A four-night Bahamas cruise on the Monarch of the Seas round-trip from Port Canaveral departing August 29 starts at only $279 per person , while a seven-night Western Caribbean cruise on Freedom of the Seas departing September 4 starts at $699 per person.

Several agents say that Mediterranean cruise prices, especially in the Eastern Med, have remained relatively low throughout the summer, and that there is last-minute availability.

Mindy Milliron of the Travel Place in Bethesda, Md., said that on a July 30, seven-night round-trip sailing from Barcelona on the Liberty of Seas, a superior balcony was available for $3,196.

“Two years ago one would be hard-pressed to find this space so close in to travel,” she said.

However, she cautioned that the air costs to Europe were still high, with no relief in sight.

Rob Clabbers, of Cruise Holidays Chicago, pointed to what he calls a very good deal, and one that requires international air in only one direction.

“Consider sailing transatlantic on Cunard Line’s Queen Mary 2,” Clabbers said. “Fares start from $695 plus taxes for seven days between New York and Southampton – with $100 to $300 shipboard credits on most of these sailings
