Crystal ups the exotic factor with 20 new ports in 2012…

Posted on 24 August 2011

Sabrina Sato performs during the first night of Carnival parades in Rio de Janeiro on March 7. A March 2012 sailing on Crystal Cruises has five maiden calls in Brazil, including an overnight during the festival.

Want to slip into Heimaey, Iceland, or samba into Paraty, Brazil?

They’re among the 20 new ports Crystal Cruises has added to its 2012 schedule. The luxury line also has a dozen new itineraries and additional shorter-length cruises planned.

Most cruises will begin with an overnight in port, and 86 percent will include at least one two-day call, providing passengers a chance for deeper exploration than possible in a short visit. Overnight destinations include major cities like Hong Kong, Stockholm and Istanbul, along with surprises, like Bordeaux, France; Sorrento, Italy; and Osaka, Japan.

In total, Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity will visit 182 ports in 59 countries on 60 itineraries next year.

The schedule offers plenty of tempting options:

  • Instead of just sailing through the canal, Crystal Serenity will stop in Panama, for a maiden call in Panama City.
  • A March sailing has five maiden calls in Brazil (Buzios, Ilha Grande, Paraty, Sao Paulo/Santos and Itajai). It includes an overnight in Rio de Janeiro during Carnival.
  • A May sailing on Europe’s west coast includes a maiden call at St.-Jean-de-Luz, France in the Basque region.
  • An August Baltic sailing includes a maiden call at Klaipeda, Lithuania, with two overnights in St. Petersburg, Russia
  • A September Eastern Canada sailing includes three maiden calls: Sept-Iles, Magdalen Islands, and little-visited Saint-Pierre/Miquelon, a tiny department of France in the North Atlantic.

Fares, start at $2,755 per person, double occupancy, and include airport/ship transfers and round-trip air from two dozen North American hubs or substantial air credits from other cities.
