The historic New York Helmsley Hotelin Midtown Manhattan will be making history again, becoming only the second Westin in the city later this year.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide and Host Hotels & Resorts today announced the launch of a $65 million renovation of the landmark building, which will eventually join its sister property, the Westin New York at Times Square.

“The transformation of the New York Helmsley Hotel into a flagship Westin hotel marks a new era for this historic hotel and its neighborhood,” Brian Povinelli, global brand leader for Westin, said in a written statement.

Located blocks away from Grand Central Terminal and the United Nations, the Helmsley was built on the grounds of a public school in 1906 and came under the ownership of controversial socialite Leona Helmsley in 1985. Helmsley died in 2007. Host Hotels bought the property last year for a reported $313.5 million.

The renovation will include a complete redesign of the hotel’s 774 guestrooms, each of which will be more than 300 square feet. Such signature Westin amenities as its “Heavenly Bed” will be included.

All rooms and suites will feature the brand’s eco-friendly design scheme using materials such as energy-saving LED and CFL lights, water-conserving low-flow plumbing and recyclable carpet pads. Rooms will remain open to accommodate guests even though the renovation will not be completed until June.

The entire façade of the building will be redesigned as will more than 15,000 square feet of meeting space. The event space will have floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the city. There will be five new breakout rooms with teleconferencing capabilities and high bandwidths. The largest space will be able to fit 450 guests. Expect a more spacious lobby bar and restaurant as it will be extended to 42nd Street.
