Hyatt takes over ex-Renaissance Wailea Beach Resort…

Posted on 17 October 2011

The former Renaissance Wailea Beach Resort in Maui, which has sat vacant since mid-2007, is finally going to be renovated, Maui News reports.

Starting early next year, the resort – on a prime 16-acre beachfront lot – will be partly demolished and rebuilt, says the story. No timeline for the hotel’s completion were given.

When it does open, the hotel won’t have a Hyatt brand name. It will open as one of Hyatt’s upscale Andaz locations, the story says.

The Andaz will have a restaurant, pools, spa, bar and grill, gym and meeting space, Maui News reports.

It will join other Andaz locations in San Diego, New York (two locations), Los Angeles and London. Several others are under construction such as hotels in Amsterdam, Delhi and Sanya Sunny Bay, China.

See the story for information about the property’s varied history, which opened as the Stouffer Wailea Beach Resort. Since 2005, the site was proposed for two different luxury chains.

Starwood’s proposal to turn it into a St. Regis hotel and condominium project died, and another plan under the Baccarat hotel name followed – but the financial crash led to its demise, too.
