Hyatt plans six more hotels in Saudi Arabia…

Posted on 07 February 2012

The Hyatt Hotels Corp. is gearing up for a major expansion in Saudi Arabia.

The American chain has just one hotel open in Saudi Arabia, the Park Hyatt Jeddah – Marina, Club and Spa, which opened in 2009.

But over the next few years, another six Hyatt-branded hotels will join that Park Hyatt.

Three of those hotels were already under development. Last week, the company announced that it had entered into agreements with the Naseel Holding Company, based in Saudi Arabia, to manage another three new Hyatt-branded hotels.

“Expanding the number of Hyatt-branded hotels in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will be a significant step towards our goal of being the preferred brand for global travelers,” Peter Norman, senior vice president of Acquisitions and Development for Hyatt International – Europe, Africa, and Middle East, said in a written statement.

In the past year, other western hotel chains such as Fairmont Hotels and Resorts and Starwood Hotels and Resorts have announced plans to open new properties in Saudi Arabia. The country’s strict visa requirement has made it difficult for westerners to travel there, particularly women. But in recent years, Saudi Arabia has begun to cultivate its tourism industry.

The Park Hyatt Riyadh, slated to open in the fourth quarter of 2015 in the capital city, will be a stand-alone 275-room building with 50 suites, three restaurants, a lounge, meeting and event space, a spa and fitness center.

The 240-room Hyatt Regency Jeddah is scheduled to open in that coastal city in the second half of 2015. It too will have three restaurants, a lobby lounge, a Regency Club lounge, meeting space, a ballroom and boardroom, a spa and fitness center.

The largest of the three, the Grand Hyatt Jeddah, will have 400 rooms, including 48 suites, and views of the Red Sea. Scheduled to open in early 2016, the hotel will also have three restaurants and the same amenities as the other two.
