Spain Tourism reorganizes…

Posted on 31 July 2010

Spain has reorganized its ministry of tourism, industry and trade, resulting in the end of a separate secretariat of tourism. The United Nations World Tourism Organization expressed concern over the move. “UNWTO strongly advocates the importance of building strong national tourism administrations which can fully maximize the potential of tourism to generate wealth and create jobs,” UNWTO Secretary-General Taleb Rifai said in a statement. Spain’s decision comes amid government-wide budget cuts and an attempt to eliminate numerous government positions. The former tourism secretariat, Joan Mesquida Ferrando, will now oversee both tourism and trade. According to the UNWTO, Spain ranks second in international tourism receipts and third in tourist arrivals.
