US Airways announced today that it will add nonstop service from Washington Reagan National Airport (DCA) to San Diego and five other cities.

The other five routes from DCA will be to: Augusta, Ga.; Fayetteville, Ark.; Minneapolis/St. Paul; Montreal and Toronto.

US Airways will be the only carrier to offer nonstop service from DCA to San Diego, Augusta and Fayetteville.

In a press release, US Airways says “the new flights are the final phase in US Airways’ plan to focus on its core service areas of Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Phoenix and Charlotte.”

US Airways gained access to the additional flights at capacity controlled DCA via a “slot-swap” deal with Delta. As part of that deal, US Airways gave Delta the flight rights for 132 flights at New York LaGuardia in exchange for 42 of Delta’s flight rights at DCA.

As for US Airways’ San Diego route, it will begin July 8 and will feature one daily round-trip flight on Airbus A319 aircraft. The new route is part of an language contained in the latest funding bill for the Federal Aviation Administration that will add eight long-distance round-trip flights from DCA.

All but 12 of the airport’s current flights are restricted to a “perimeter” of 1,250 miles. But the language in the FAA bill allowed the airport’s four biggest airlines – American, Delta, United and US Airways – to convert one existing “within perimeter” round-trip flight into a long distance one. The other three carriers have already announced which city they would choose for their extra long-distance flights.

The bill also will add four new flights at DCA, all of which will be exempt from the perimeter restriction. Seven airlines submitted bids, and the Department of Transportation is expected to name which carriers will get the rights by the end of May.
