Delta uses regional jets to skirt Wright Amendment limits…

In case you missed this news earlier this month, Delta has announced plans to add nonstop service between Dallas Love Field and its Atlanta hub. Delta Connection affiliate ExpressJet will fly five daily round-trip flights on the route starting Sept. 5.

The route, however, will come at the expense of Delta’s current offering between Dallas Love Field and Memphis. Delta will end its two daily round-trip flights on that route on the same day that it begins the Atlanta service.

The Atlanta route will be an unusual one for Dallas Love, which is still subject to Wright Amendment restrictions that limit flying from the close-to-downtown Dallas airport. The amendment is scheduled to be phased out in 2014, but – in its current form – it permits commercial airline flights from Dallas Love only to airports in states adjacent to Texas and in Missouri, Kansas, Alabama and Mississippi.

Nonstop commercial airline flights to other states are currently prohibited by the amendment, though there is one notable exception. Planes seating 56 or fewer passengers are exempt from the Wright Amendment’s geographic restrictions.

And that’s how Delta will be able to offer nonstop service between Dallas Love and Atlanta. Delta Connection affiliate ExpressJet will fly the route using 50-seat Canadair regional jets.

“For our customers in Dallas who prefer to fly from Love Field, this gives them a nonstop flight to Atlanta and from there they can access our hub,” Delta spokesman Trebor Banstetter says to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “We feel like it is a real enhancement over our [existing] service at Love Field.”

Delta will continue to offer a schedule of 13 daily round-trip flights on its route between Dallas/Fort Worth and Atlanta, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
