Getting a passport the easy way…

Posted on 15 September 2011

If you’re among the estimated 70% of Americans who still don’t own a passport, here’s a chance to streamline the process.

This Saturday, Sept. 17, is National Passport day, when you can apply without an appointment for a new passport or update an old one at passport facilities across the country.

On National Passport Day this Saturday, Sept. 17, you can apply for a passport without an appointment at one of 26 passport agencies nationwide, plus participating post offices and clerks of court.

To cut down on wait times, travelers are encouraged to complete applications online at the State Department’s website, print the completed forms and bring them to the agency or other acceptance facility. A new adult passport costs $135; renewals (which can be processed by mail) are $110; standard processing takes 4 to 6 weeks, or you can pay an expedite fee of $60 and receive one in 2 to 3 weeks.

Other points to keep in mind:

— One color photo is required for new passports; click here for specific restrictions.

— First time applicants need evidence of U.S. citizenship (i.e. a certified birth certificate) and primary identification, such as a current driver’s license.

–If you’re applying for a passport for a child under 16, both parents or guardians must be present for the passport approval, if appropriate.

–Even if your passport hasn’t expired, remember that some countries won’t let you enter if it’s due to be renewed within six months.
